This may sound "nuts" but send your card flipped inside out to help protect the front!
I recently received a Birthday card just this way and thought, "wow, what a great idea!" Her message is what I saw first and then I flipped it back to a perfectly protected card. Sometimes a card gets beat up going through the mail or even causes holes in the envelopes because of the embellishments. Flipping it gives it extra protection without adding more to the envelope!!!
I hope you give this a try and now be sure to not forget to stamp the inside of your card as well for some first look fun!
